Picture
yourself breaking away from the crowd of runners……again. As you
cross the finish line, you check the time and once again, you
have bettered your personal best time. For any runner, no matter
what level, there is no better feeling.
The sad truth is that for many runners, they never get to
experience this great feeling.
Why?
Most of us train for running for a marathon, half marathon, 5k,
10k races, but many never race to our
potential. There
are two main factors to why this is. One has to do with Training
and the other deals with Racing. As for training, the BIG
problem most people have is that they RACE their workouts. They
leave their races at the track. They worry too much about
hitting a specific pace or mileage which they believe will be
best for them. They compete too much with themselves and lose
focus on the end result. In some senses, they try too hard. As
for racing, well, suppose you do everything right in your
training and still don’t have your best race? More then likely
what needs to be considered is HOW you raced. Did you run a
SMART race? I have seen hundreds of books and articles and very
few really talk about HOW TO RACE. They spend pages and pages
about tempo, thresholds and etc. and nary a word about racing.
It Takes Courage!
In some senses, learning to race smart is a "secret weapon"
because you can gain so much by doing so little. And so many
people are afraid to do it because they are afraid that it won't
work. It takes courage to run smart. It isn't rocket science but
it really requires a change in one's thinking and my goal is to
help you to change your paradigm and support you in changing
your mindset. Through my experience as a coach and a runner I
have developed key components which should help you optimize
your racing PRECISELY and also get the most out of your
training.
