My Story
Up to a few years ago, my
running training was just like everyone's. And I had
been struggling with consistency in my racing. And it
just seemed I was getting slower.
I
attributed it to age for a long while but I really
wondered if this was it. So I started looking at my
training and racing more closely to see exactly what I
needed to work on. I became a guinea pig of sorts, not
unlike what the famous coach, Arthur Lydiard had done. I
fully analyzed my program. Then it became clear, a light
bulb went on! Running training finally started to make
sense. The bottom line:
I finally figured it out: I was using the gray matter which
resided between my ears, I was RUNNING SMART. I then
made a plan and implemented it. Bingo! I had just turned
45 years old and just finished a 5K race and nearly PRed
with a time of 17:25. My best time was 16:57 when I was
28 and training 50-60 miles a week. Not bad! Then a few
weeks later, I nearly PRed in the 10 mile with a time of
60:36 just 30 seconds off my best time, again at 28. I
was amazed! I then implemented the program with the high
school cross country program I coached. Over the next
six years our teams went on to win two state
championships, numerous invitationals and several all
state runners passed through the program. It was obvious
training and racing with the RUNNING SMART principles I
created was working! So I decided to share it with the
world!
